The radios operate in the VHF MURS band and transmit 500mw on high power. Channels 1 through 3 are strictly MURS channels while Channels 4 & 5 might be shared with Business Band Radio users in your area. At only 1/2 watt output, the 5 mile range claimed is probably stretching it unless you are talking from a mountain top.
